5 Fun-Filled Days Out Less Than 15 Miles from Abbey Farm Ormskirk

Keeping the kids occupied on a camping holiday can be a nightmare – their tendency to get a tad stir crazy can set in alarmingly quickly if they’re unstimulated – meaning it’s important to keep your days fun-packed when you’re in such close proximity to each other for a prolonged period of time. You’ll thank us later…

Here are our top picks for things to do and see within 15 miles of the Abbey Farm campsite:

One of the beauties of camping in Ormskirk is how close it is to a range of interesting places and – most importantly – the sea! Southport has a range of activities and places of interest to make for a great day out. Firstly, you can take a walk along the Southport promenade on a warm day, or nip over to the Eco Centre, where you can rent bikes for the day and explore the area on wheels.

Tuck into some renowned fish and chips for lunch on the pier, then let the kids run wild in the amusements with a bag of pennies. For chillier days, you can take the family to The Atkinson, a multi-function cultural building, with an art gallery, library and exhibitions on offer.

Fancy a taste of the city after the rural relaxation of Ormskirk? Liverpool is a stone’s throw a way and – having been voted Capital of Culture in the last decade – doesn’t disappoint when it comes to things to do.

Whether it’s shopping at the huge Liverpool ONE, finding out about the scouse sweethearts at The Beatles Story, marvelling at Liverpool’s two beautiful cathedrals or wandering around the docks – Liverpool will keep everyone happy.

Formby is famous for its beach, offering a beautiful landscape to escape to from the hustle and bustle of everyday life – without having to board a plane. Whilst there isn’t a wealth of attractions in the area, what do you need other than sunshine and sandcastles?

If you fancy a bit of greenery, check out the National Trust site in the area, with all the countryside you can shake a stick at.

Ribble Estuary National Nature Reserve

Check out some of the North West’s most beautiful wildfowl at the Ribble Estuary reserve, where you can spot over 250,000 ducks, swans, geese and wading birds on an average day.

If you’re lucky, you may happen across some of the country’s rarer birds, including skylarks, meadow pipits and linnets. Doesn’t harm that the scenery is beautiful too!

Aintree Race Course

More of a destination for a day when you can leave the kids with the grandparents, Aintree Race Course is the perfect opportunity to get dressed up and rub shoulders with Liverpool’s celebrities.
